I Still Have a Lot to Learn at Squidoo

A few days ago I decided to make Squidoo my number one online effort. I started a lens a while ago that I update periodically highlighting my adventures.  I’m completely done with trying to make some “extra cash” with those content sites. I slugged it through to make $52 at The Content Authority which is okay but for the amount of time I spent, I could have made at least one new lens a day and promoted and worked on the ones I do have. It was a wasted effort really. Wie Schade. (Too bad). But at least I know that now.

Learning from The Captain

I’ve been glued to the writings of Captain Squid and have made it my project to read every single article in that blog and take notes. I am going through my lenses one by one and trying to apply what I’ve learned. Sure, I’ve been Squidooing pretty much since the site started but I’ve started taken it pretty seriously this week. I WILL build this up to be my second income stream (with my first major one being eHow residuals from the articles I do have up). Once I finish with that, I’ll do the same on Squidoo Cool and any other blog or info that I can get my hands on.

A Glimpse at My Business Plan

Okay, so this is pretty much what I’ll be doing.

  1. Start a lens on a topic that I will enjoy writing about.
  2. Find a way to monetize it without being annoying.
  3. Use primarily Amazon module, Commission Junction, and Clickbank.
  4. Once I find a good niche, make a mini site.
  5. If the mini site does well, turn it into a bigger site or a blog.
  6. Rinse and repeat.

On the one hand, that looks simple. On the other hand, it’s an oversimplified view on what I’ve been doing with my time. My days are spent making lenses, updating lenses, analyzing stats, reading information, and overall trying to do what I can to make each and every lens a success.

As usual I’ll keep you posted. For now, I invite you to subscribe to my Squidoo lens RSS feed so that you can view all my lens updates and follow along on my progress.

    Hi Katherine,

Just found your blog from a comment on another website, and it looks great. I have heard a lot of stories about squidoo lenses being shut down almost arbitrarily, particularly when they involve affiliate products through clickbank and the like, so I have been reluctant to spend time building them. I’ll be interested in seeing how your experiences go!

Hey Michelle, I’ve actually never had a lens erased and I mention plenty of products. I think the trick is to create a really good lens with lots of wonderful and helpful content that relates to the product. Squidoo also has a somewhat vague list on topics they don’t really like but I think that if the lens has tons of quality content then there would be no complaint.

Some people went nuts for a while thinking that Squidoo was the ticket to wealth on the internet so they created a lot of crappy pages that basically were just one huge advertisement. So they really cracked down on that because their authority with google was being compromised. In order to maintain their integrity they had to do what they did.

You know, I’ve read and read in the Squidoo forums and stuff and I still don’t get it. I’ve made nothing. I get no traffic from it. Maybe I just don’t put enough effort into it.

Danielle, it takes a while for a lens to get going and some never actually do. Your comment just gave me the inspiration for my next post! I’m going to do a “Squidoo SEO” post. I have a routine that seems to get results every time I bother following it.
