My business model is always changing and evolving. When I first started writing, I stuck to mainly print and some online magazines. I moved on to writing for clients and starting my own blogs. Then Squidoo came into the picture and I started creating lenses like mad.
Now, the face of my business looks much different. I’m still creating lenses. I have several blogs, all on wordpress. I am social networking – was that even a phrase when I first started my career? I am not sure – 2002 seems ages ago in internet years.
I made the leap into writing online sort of in the middle of the rush. I’ve been doing it long enough to remember the resistence amongst some writers to change. I always thought that in order to really get anywhere I had to examine each “new thing” to see if it was worth my effort or if I could make some money from it.
Things change, things stay the same – that’s the way it has been.
So now, after nearly seven years as a freelance writer, I can offer you this bit of advice. Things will ALWAYS change. Don’t resist it. Let it evolve. Not only do the technologies change, but so will you. Follow your instincts and don’t be afraid to change or take on an exciting new project. Isn’t that why you started working for yourself to begin with?

I love your Squidoo stuff, and this blog. It’s very inspiring, but I have to ask this, and pls (don’t take it the wrong way) tell it to me straight: is it really possible to make a support-yourself-income using Squidoo, Associated Content, Hub Pages, and/or Rentacoder or Elance?
I am a professional writer (specializing in medicine). I still maintain a print health & wellness column for a local magazine, and I used to work from home, but I wasn’t getting enough copywriting clients for it to be sustainable. I still get some clients, but again, not a good income. Now I am back to a 2 hr car commute and it hurts. So puhleeeez, tell me straight up, is it possible to make a modest income (say $2,000/month) with the abovementioned sites, plus a blog or two? I have no fear of writing a lot. I love to write and have always wanted to be a writer. I was a professional print newspaper-based journalist for over 10 yrs., so the writing thing isn’t a problem. But before I take even more time away from my husband and toddlers, I was hoping you could answer my questions.
Many thanks!
Deanna, I am going to email you but I will tell you straight up – it’s more than doable to make $2000 a month online using those methods – and you can even built up your income to that level part time, then quit your job. It should take you about three months to get to that point.
